19W Still Closed Possum Trot Open

Crews from the NC Department of Transportation have been working diligently to clear several tons of rock and mud from a slide on Hwy 19W about 12 miles from Cane River.  A huge rock, the size of a small house slid into the roadway on Wednesday after heavy rains for several days had weakened the area near the river.  The big rock has been split down to movable sizes and work crews continued hauling loads of dirt and rock out of the area yesterday. It may  be several more days before the road is clear. Some of those rocks on 19w have been used shore up Possum Trot Road in south Yancey County 14 miles away from the 19W slide. One lane of that road slid down a steep embankment. Engineers say Possum Trot is now open to two lanes of traffic on gravel covering the repair. The repaired section will be paved when the weather warms up.
