Mitchell Commissioners Secure Needed Funding

Mitchell County Commissioners were able to secure additional funding for the new 911 building. Funding problems arose when bids came in for the building that were much more than the county had available. Mitchell County originally was awarded $2 million from the State 911 Board for construction and building of the new 911 center. After administrative fees and other associated costs the county had $1.4 million left for construction. Bids came in at nearly $1 million more than that. County officials traveled to Raleigh April 20th to ask the state board for more funds. Mitchell County Commission Chairman Vern Grindstaff and others were able to convince the board of the need for the additional funding. The 911 construction project will now be able to proceed.  The county plans on using the 911 surcharge funds to pay for equipment upgrades that will be needed.
