The problem with holidays is people get busy celebrating and vacationing and blood donations go down at a time when the need for blood goes up. The American Red Cross has issued an urgent call for eligible donors of all blood types, particularly type O, to give blood now as there is a shortage of blood and platelets. More than 550 fewer blood drives were organized by businesses and community groups last week than during a typical week, as individuals across the country celebrated the holiday. This is about 15,000 fewer donations than needed, causing donations to now be distributed to hospitals faster than they come in.
