The Mitchell County Soil and Water Conservation District has recently been awarded $80,437 from the North Carolina Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund to help purchase an easement on a 108 acre farm. Also from the same Trust Fund the southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy received $190,000 for a conservation easement on a 125 acre cattle farm in Mitchell County and $61,250 to preserve an 89 acre farm in Mitchell County. Another grant came from the NC Beehive Grant Fund who awarded certified beekeeper Michelle Mejia of Mitchell County funds to create additional beehives.
