Details: Adele Mae Lumsden, March 2, 1935-July 13, 2013, died peacefully at Feather River Hospital in Paradise, CA with family at her side.
She and her younger sister Barbara were born to Charles J. (who passed away suddenly in 1936) and Mae Bailey Clarke, and raised by her mother and stepfather, Franklin C.J. Slay (m. 1938), along with their younger brother, Ron, in New York City, NY.
In 1952 she graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, continued on to become a Registered Nurse, graduating from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. In 1956 she married Charles A. Lumsden, Sr., having four children.
Adele balanced her career, education and single motherhood with her wanderlust. She maintained her license as a Registered Nurse in California from 1963 until 2001. After briefly living and working in Germany and Kansas, she returned to California. She began working at Enloe Hospital in Chico, CA in 1978, where she especially enjoyed her position as Infection Control RN. She set her goal on making her life in Paradise, purchasing her home there in 1983. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Chapman College in 1986, and retired from Enloe in 1999. She had traveled the world during her working years, visiting many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, taking her children and grandchildren on road trips around the United States and making life long friends along the way.
She spent many carefree summers during her childhood and throughout her life visiting cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents in Penland, NC where her great-great grandfather, John Bailey, settled around 1800. A portion of Bailey’s Peak facing Penland remains under the stewardship of her brother and sister, and her children.
An engaged and loving mother and grandmother, she brought her adventures to life with her many stories and little keepsakes she collected around the world.
