Amanda Biddix Receives Congressional Invitation

A student from Harris Middle School has received an exclusive invitation to attend the “Breakfast on the Hill”, a Congressional Breakfast ceremony in Washington, DC sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in representing their state’s history.  Amanda Biddix, an 8th grade student at HMS, recently won the NC National History Day competition in Raleigh for her age group.  As such, she will be competing at the national event at the University of Maryland at College Park the third week of June.  During this time, NEH the U.S. Congress receives nominations from each state and territory for a select number of students to attend their Congressional Breakfast at the Rayburn House Office Building, scheduled for Wednesday, June 18th at 7:15AM.  Initially approximately sixty students are nominated nationally for this honor and then then list is narrowed down to twenty.  Amanda was informed she was not only the North Carolina nominee but had made the final list.  Amanda, along with the 19 others honorees, will enjoy breakfast and speak with representatives and senators from their state and others about their respective research projects.  This is a huge honor and all the administration, faculty and staff of Mitchell County Schools wish to congratulate Amanda and wish her the best of luck in the National History Day competition as well.

Amanda’s project is titled Sam Ervin: Defender of the Constitution and it is a documentary that explores Ervin’s life, especially his chairmanship of the Watergate Committee. Her research included visits to the Sam Ervin Library at Western Piedmont Community College and interviews with Rufus Edmisten who was the deputy chief counsel for the Watergate Committee and Karl Campbell, author of Senator Sam Ervin: Last of the Founding Fathers, a recent book that looks at Ervin’s life and actions.
