Annual Free Holiday Concert by Toe River Chamber Ensemble

The Toe River Chamber Ensemble invites the public to their Annual Holiday Concert at 7pm on Tuesday, December 12 at the First Baptist Church on the Burnsville Square. The concert is FREE, open to the public and will feature several well-known classical favorites and some more contemporary selections.

The ensemble will perform several traditional Christmas tunes and, as in previous holiday concerts, elicit audience participation. No holiday concert would be complete with a few community Carol sing-a-longs—music that will put the holiday season in the air and resounding off the walls.

In a classical vein, the orchestra will offer selections from the “Nutcracker”, the 1892 two-act ballet by Tchaikovsky and one of his most famous compositions. Then Elizabeth Boulter on the recorder and Michael L. Jones on the English Horn will combine sounds with the traditional “Carol of the Bells” (based on a Ukranian folk chant) and Irish “Wexford Carol,” one of the oldest Christmas carols in European tradition.
Selections also will include the traditional English Christmas carol, “First Noel” and Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” coincidentally conceived during a heat wave in August of 1948 and completed during the snows of February, 1948. Finally, “Christmas in the Air” will bring out very popular holiday songs ranging from “Frosty the Snowman” and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” for the younger set, to “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” for those who still believe in the magic of the season.

The Toe River Chamber Ensemble is the Toe River Arts Council’s own community orchestra under the direction of conductor, Lisa Mauney. First organized in 1975, the Ensemble includes musicians from Yancey, Mitchell, Madison, and Buncombe Counties, and from many backgrounds, professions and ages. It is an interesting cross-section and a demographic blend united by a love of classical music. Come listen to the sounds of the season at the First Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 12, at 7pm. Your spirits will lift into the rafters with the music of the season.

The Toe River Chamber Ensemble is made possible in part by a Grassroots Arts Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Cultural Resource Department, and is sponsored by the Toe River Arts Council. For more information, please call 828-682-7215 or visit
