Details: Arval James Woody of Dale Road in Spruce Pine, the Grassy Creek community, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012 Brian Center Health & Rehab in Spruce Pine.
Born on September 21, 1920 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late James and Belle McKinney Woody. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Noblett Woody who passed away in 2006. He was also preceded in death by his brothers; Floyd, Paul, Frank, and Walter Woody and his sisters; sisters; Zelma McKinney and Elenora Young.
Mr. Woody was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and fought in the, Battle of the Bulge. After his return from his military service, he taught farmers education to military veterans. He was the owner and operator of Woody’s Chair Shop in Spruce Pine for sixty years. He is honored by having one of his custom handmade chairs on display in the Smithsonian Museum and was commissioned to make custom handmade chairs for former President John F. Kennedy’s children, John, Jr. and Caroline which are on permanent display in the Kennedy Library. He was recognized as a, ‘North Carolina Living treasure’. He was a charter member of the Grassy Creek Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in the success of the fire department.
The funeral services for Arval Woody will be conducted on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 3:00 pm at the Grassy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev’s. Matthew Mills and Sibbald Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenlee Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the church.
Mr. Woody is survived by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to either: Grassy Creek Baptist Church or Parkway Volunteer Fire Department.
