Break Ins Solved, Thousands of Dollars of Stolen Property Recovered

A joint investigation between Mitchell and McDowell County Sheriff’s departments solve numerous break ins and recover thousands of dollars of stolen property in three counties. The following individuals were arrested in connection with the investigation; Natalie Marie Houston, age 31, of 31 Kings Lane, Newland, N.C., Joshua William Honeycutt, age 34, no street address given, Marion, N.C., Pamela Deneen Lawing, age 49, of 1216 Tempie Mountain Road, Spruce Pine, N.C., and Gene Gary Street, age 49, of 1216 Tempie Mountain Road, Spruce Pine, N.C.
 
Captain R.V. Wiseman advised in the past few months several homes in the Little Switzerland area of Mitchell and McDowell County had been broken into. The majority of these homes were homes real estate companies in the area had listed for sale. These homes were in Mitchell and McDowell Counties. Taken from these homes were household items such as lamps, antiques, towels, electronics, flat screen televisions, and different items which could be sold quickly at Flea Markets.
 
There were also residences broken into in other areas of Mitchell County and one in Yancey County.
 
The homes that was offered by the real estate company had been entered without force, indicating someone had the code and or keys to the lock boxes.
 
Last week Yancey County Detectives received information that Honeycutt may be involved in the break ins.
 
Captain Wiseman who had dealt with Honeycutt in the past knew he was living with Houston.
Houston was a former real estate agent for a company in Spruce Pine.
 
Detective C.M. Beam was handling the investigation for Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office. Detective J.T. Grindstaff was handling the investigation for McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.
 
Detective Beam and Grindstaff went to aggressively trying to locate Honeycutt and Houston.
 
A confidential informant advised Captain Wiseman he saw Houston and Honeycutt at Verizon in Spruce Pine. The confidential informant then observed the pair leave in a black Nissan bearing North Carolina Registration BMJ-2022. The informant then followed the couple and watched them enter the Swiss Pine Lake area.
 
Captain Wiseman knew the couple frequent Street and Lawing’s residence on Tempie Mountain.
 
Captain Wiseman located the vehicle which Houston had rented a black Nissan at Street’s residence. Captain Wiseman knocked on the door of residence and nobody would answer the door.
 
A confidential informant then advised Captain Wiseman, that Houston had a storage building rented at Grassy Creek.
 
Detectives Beam and Grindstaff then obtained a search warrant for storage units. Before the search warrant could be executed another break in occurred in the Swiss Pine Lake Community. This was also a home being offered by a real estate company.
 
Detectives executed the search warrant at the storage building. When they opened the door the items taken from the Swiss Pine Lake residence was setting in the front of the storage unit.
 
Officers recovered several thousand dollars of stolen items at this storage building.
 
On Friday officers got a report of someone trying to break in a residence on Tempie Mountain. When officers arrived they found Houston and Honeycutt hiding in a storage building at the residence. The couple was taken into custody.
 
After a lengthy interview of the Houston and Honeycutt, the Detectives obtained a search warrant for Street’s and Lawing’s residence.
 
In the early morning hours on Saturday the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Street’s residence on Tempie Mountain. Officers located several thousand dollars’ worth of stolen property at the residence, along with a stolen vehicle from McDowell County.
 
Houston was charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny, and felony possession of stolen property (5 counts) in Mitchell County. She is being held on a $130,000.00 secured bond.  Her court date is June 4, 2014.
 
Honeycutt was charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny, and felony possession of stolen property (5counts) in Mitchell County. He is being held on a $155,000.00 secured bond. His court date is June 4, 2014.
 
Street is charged with felony possession of stolen property and possession of a stolen vehicle in Mitchell County. He is held on a $15,000.00 secured bond. He is schedule to appear in court on June 4, 2104.
 
Lawing is charged with felony breaking and entering in McDowell County. She is being held on a $150,000.00 secured bond. She is schedule to appear in court on June 4, 2014.
