Details: Claude R. Willis of Rabbit Hop Road passed away on Sunday, September 1st at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones. Claude was born May 4th, 1929 in Mitchell County to Sam and Florence Sparks Willis. His loving wife of 53 years, Dora Ann Willis passed away in May of 2006. He was also preceded in death by two sisters: Jenny Grindstaff and Sallie Hoyle and a brother, Frank Willis.
Claude owned and operated Claude’s Alignment Service in Spruce Pine for 43 years. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the “D Battery 24th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion” later becoming a member of the US Army Reserve. He was an avid NASCAR fan and a loyal supporter of Richard Petty. Claude was a member of the Big Crabtree Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and director of the Youth Boys.
Claude is survived by his daughter, Karen Bartlett and friend Gordon Ray of Spruce Pine; sister, Maude Hoyle of Spruce Pine; three grandchildren: Travis McKinney, Brandy Forbes and husband David and Tony McKinney and wife Amber; two great grandchildren: Dawson Forbes and Breeounna Forbes; special nephew, Sammy Willis and special friend Doris Burleson.
Funeral Services will be 12:00 pm Wednesday, September 4, 2013 in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home with the Rev. Dean Honeycutt officiating. Burial will follow in the Big Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family’s request is that you honor the memory of Claude with an act of kindness. Do something thoughtful, generous and unexpected for someone close to you. Know that Claude will be smiling at you.
