Details: Mrs. Dorothy Stuart Ray died in her home on January 20, 2013. A native of Fairmount, Georgia, she was born March 10, 1919, to the late James Robert and Margaret Lenora Holt Stuart, and was the youngest of seven children. She was a member of the Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church, the Sue Brown Circle, the Willing Workers Sunday School class, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Alpha Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Burnsville Woman's Club. She was a graduate of Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, where she met her husband of 67 years, Mack B. Ray, who preceded her in death. A member of the N.C. Retired Teachers Association, she taught school for over forty years in Georgia and North Carolina.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Carolyn Ray Cort, and son-in-law, Dr. David A. Cort of Burnsville; granddaughters: Lisa Cort Owen (husband Jeffrey J. Owen and daughters Susannah and Sophia) of Asheville; Heidi Dorothy Van Til (husband Dr. Ethan S. Van Til and son Michael) of Traverse City, Michigan; Dr. Carrie Cort Friesen (husband Bradley C. Friesen and daughters Greta, Emma, and Lydia) of Winston-Salem; and Dr. Gretchen Stuart Banks (husband R. Seth Banks and son David) of Winston-Salem.She was buried in the Academy Cemetery on January 20, 2013. A memorial service will be held at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church building fund (PO Box 85, Burnsville, NC, 28714).
