Election Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow is election day. In our area people will go to the polls to vote for the President all the way to local commissioners and members of the Board of Education. One stop early voting ended on Saturday and now those who have not already voted will go to their individual precincts to cast their ballots.

The Mitchell County local election of county commissioners will not be very exciting as there were four people on the ticket but Democrat Howard Larsen withdrew early in the race, leaving Republicans Brandon Pitman, incumbent Jeff Harding and Harley Masters to most likely take the three open positions. In the Board of Education there are two seats up for grabs and three people on the ballot including incumbents Brenda Sparks and Sam  Blevins and newcomer Tabatha Dickson. Ed Terrell is unopposed for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor and Kathy Laws is unopposed for Register of Deeds.

Things become a bit more contentious in Yancey County with Democrats and Republicans each offering a full slate of contenders in both the commissioners race and for the Board of Education. In the commissioners race Democrats Shirlyn Sullins Edwards, Randy Griggs and Jack Laws take on incumbent Republicans Jeff Whitson, David Grindstaff and Mark Ledford. In the school board race incumbent Republican Edwin Fortner is on the ticket along with  newcomer Republicans Cody Whitson and Will Hensley. The Democrats offer newcomers Susan Buchanan, Patricia Fender and Shelda W. McIntosh. Incumbents Angie Weatherman and Norb McKinney are not running for re-election. Brian McIntosh is unopposed for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor and Susan Jobe is unopposed for Register of Deeds.

Polls are open 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. The hours can be extended if polling times are delayed or interrupted by more than 15 minutes.
