It was Primary Election Day in North Carolina Tuesday. In local races, Mitchell County was voting for 3 commissioners. Vern Grindstaff received 1728 votes and Bill Slagle had 1676, each had 25% of the vote. Joe Street was the 3rd commissioner elected with 1548 votes or 23%. Dan McKinney had 1318 votes. Wesley Vaughn received 552 votes. In Yancey County the local race of interest was the School Board race. Incumbent Mike Orr was reelected with 25% of the vote, 1412 total votes. Jeanne Tyner was the other winner with 23%, 1313 votes. Grace Whitson had 1208, Judy Presnell 931 votes and incumbent Jack Tipton was voted off the board with 873 votes.
Other Races of interest includes the District Attorney 24th District race where Seth Banks was elected to office, winning 48% of the vote, 6284 total votes. Britt Springer received 33%, 4321 votes and Nathan Miller had 19%, 2494 votes. Seth Banks carried 3 out of 5 of the counties in the district.
In the NC State Senate District 47 Republican Primary incumbent Ralph Hise was reelected with 62% of the vote, 8342 votes. Michael Lavender had 38%, 5116 votes. Ralph Hise won in all 6 of the Counties that make up the District.
In the crowded US Senate race Thom Tillis received 46% of the vote in a group of 8 republicans. Greg Brannon was 2nd with 27% of the vote. On the Democratic side of the US Senate race Kay Hagan received 77% of the vote and will be challenged by Thom Tillis in the fall.
