Details: Eston Lee Pate of Green Mountain went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.
     He was born June 14th, 1925 to Uriah (Rice) and Katie Willis Pate.
     Eston retired with 40 years of service as a rural letter carrier from the United States Postal Service.  He succceeded his father, Rice, who started out delivering the mail on horseback and retired with 30 years service.  Eston served his country in the United States Navy.  He was 17 years old when he enlisted, thus requiring his father’s signature.   He was Seaman First Class, a gunner on the USS James Iredell .  Eston saw action in the Invasion of Normandy during World War II.  After the war, he graduated from Tipton Hill School where he played basketball, coached by A.D. Harrell.  He earned the name “Mad Dog Pate”.  He often told stories of how everyone howled when he entered the gym. Eston also participated in Track and Field in which he earned an array of medals and ribbons.  
     Eston never saw a stranger.  He loved meeting and talking to people.  He was a very generous and kind man.   Eston loved to hand out two dollar bills. He was greeted at the mailboxes by children along the route, who knew he always had bubble gum or chewing gum to give them.  Eston not only delivered the mail, but delivered groceries when called upon.   He was a friend to all who knew him.   But above all he loved the Lord. He was a member of Huntdale Union Church where he served as a deacon, a former Sunday school teacher, and superintendent.  Eston was faithful and was willing to fulfill any duty at the church.
     In addition to his parents, Eston is preceded in death by his first wife Birdie Peterson Pate, brothers, Virgil Pate and Clifton Pate, sisters, Lena Phillips, Edith Killian, and Frances Miller and stepson, Greg Ledford.   He is survived by wife, Kate Griffith Pate, sons, Phillip Rodney Pate  and wife, Brenda of Green Mountain, NC  and Stephen Alan Pate and wife, Becky of Bakersville, NC,  stepson,Randall Ledford and wife, Wanda of Town and Country, Missouri, a brother, Dallas Pate and wife, Geneva of Crossnore, NC granddaughters,  Sherry Tipton (Dean)of Green Mountain, NC, Jennifer Bentley (Rob) of Sammamish, Washington, Kristy Brown (Anthony) of Waterloo, Iowa, Janet Moyle (Rob) of Plano, Texas, and  Brittany Mckinney (Jody)of Bakersville, NC,  grandson ,Luke Pate (Jerica) of Clyde, NC, great grandchildren, Daniel Tipton, Aaron Tipton, Gabe Pate, Grant Pate, Mason McKinney, Addison McKinney, Dayton Brown, Preston Brown, Shepherd Brown, Cameron Brown,  Alex Bentley, Sebastian Bentley, Katelyn Moyle, and Brayden Moyle, several nieces and nephews, and special caregiver, Angie Buchanan.
     The family will receive friends Saturday, March 29th, 2014, from 6 to 8 pm at Henline-Hughes Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be Sunday, March 30th Huntdale Union Church at 2 pm.  The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.  Interment will follow at Peterson Cemetery.
