Details: Evelyn “Maw” Garland of Bakersville went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 12th, 2014 at Mission Hospital. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of Garrett and Ruby Tipton.
She was preceded in death by her father, Garrett Tipton, her loving husband of 59 years, John Garland; daughter, Benita Maney and a brother, Wade Tipton.
Evelyn was a member of Heaven Bound Baptist Church where she played the piano. Evelyn never knew a stranger, lived her entire life serving others and will always be remembered for her sweet spirit. She enjoyed cooking, watching Atlanta Braves baseball and Carolina basketball.
Surviving is her mother, Ruby Garland Tipton; daughters: Debbie Ollis and husband, David, of Burnsville and Janet Cook and husband, Phillip, of Bakersville; sisters: Edna Griffith of Bakersville and Elaine Laws and husband Dale, of Bakersville; brother, Wayne Tipton and wife, Jane, of Bakersville; special sister-in-law, Davenia Tipton; grandchildren: Kenny Maney and wife, Lisa, Mark Maney, Tonya McCoyle, Billy Shepherd and wife, Lydia, Ryan Cook and wife, Shana and Kasey Cook and wife, Cara; great- grandchildren: Monica Phillips, Megan Woody, Bradley Shepherd, Piper, Sawyer and Jonah Cook and a great-great grandson, Tristan Phillips.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The Rev. Steve Glenn will officiate. Burial will follow in the Garland Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the services at the funeral home.
