First Pinning Ceremony at MHU

Friday evening, December 16, 2016, three Mars Hill University students became the institution's first nursing graduates. But on Thursday evening, the university marked their accomplishment with an event unique to the nursing program: the pinning ceremony. Jessica Dennison of Asheville, N.C.; Amanda Lambert of Brevard, N.C.; and Stephanie Shelton of Mars Hill, N.C., are the first students to complete the requirements to receive a bachelor of science in nursing (B.S.N.) degree through Mars Hill's Judge-McRae School of Nursing. These three nurses already were registered nurses (R.N.) and earned their B.S.N.'s through the university's registered nurse to bachelor of science in nursing (R.N. to B.S.N.) program, which began in the summer of 2015 Mars Hill also offers a four-year, pre-licensure B.S.N.; the first cohort in that program began classes this fall.

Graduating nurses receive a pin which signifies their transition from the student role to the medical practice role. The tradition is said to have originated in the 1860s with Florence Nightingale, who presented medals of excellence to the graduating nurses of the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas Hospital in London, England. As part of Thursday evening's ceremony, Dennison, Lambert, and Shelton recited the Nightingale/Nursing Pledge, which is an adaptation of the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians.

Mars Hill University is a premier private, liberal arts institution offering over 30 baccalaureate degrees and one graduate degree in elementary education. Founded in 1856 by Baptist families of the region, the campus is located just 20 minutes north of Asheville in the mountains of western North Carolina.
