Karen Long Buchanan, age 57, of the Spear Community, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 5th, 2018 at her home. A native of Avery County, she was the daughter of the late James and Derado Johnson Long. She was also preceded in death by brothers: Jerry and Steve Long. Karen was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. She enjoyed being outdoors, listening to music, watching old movies, but above all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Surviving are her daughters: Summer Buchanan of Bakersville and Brittany Wilson and husband, Dillion Barrier, of Raleigh; son, Dylan Buchanan of Newland; granddaughter, Taylor McKinney; grandson, Aiden Buchanan; sisters: Linda Stafford and husband, Ricky, of Plumtree and Patti Rhyne also of Plumtree; brothers: Jeff Long and wife, Sandy, of Spear and Mike Long and wife, Janeen, of Spruce Pine and friend, Larry Buchanan of Bakersville. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 8th in Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. Rev. Dean Honeycutt will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the church.
