Details: Lieutenant Colonel Michael Wayne McKinney of Hawk Stone Cove, Hampton, Virginia passed away September 3rd at Hampton VA Medical Center. He was a Retired Veteran of The United States Army and was a native of Mitchell County, NC. He was a member of Fork Mountain Baptist Church and attended Pine Chapel Baptist Church in Hampton Virginia. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University and a Masters graduate from The University of Michigan.
His military service included; 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Defense Logistics Agency, Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, 2nd Infantry Division, Director of Logistics, Graduate of Quartermaster Corps, Graduate of Command and General Staff Officers Course, Warrior Spirit and Warrior Support Award, Korea Defense Service Medal, War on Terriorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Desert Storm, Leadership of Excellence Award, Creator of The Gator Standard, The Bronze Star Medal, Camp Red Cloud Korea, and The Legion of Merit.
Survivors include; his parents Wayne and Tillie McKinney, one sister, Melissa McKinney and husband Dean Corn, and two nephews; Dalton and Dillon Ledford, all of Bakersville, NC.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Henline – Hughes Funeral Home with Ronnie Gouge and John McKinney officiating. Interment will follow at Fork Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery with the North Carolina Honor Guard conducting Military Honors. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
