MCC Mitchell County Founders Day Awards



Mayland Community College Board of Trustees celebrated community members and alumni who went above and beyond in their work. Trustee members, as well as MCC President Dr. John Boyd, honored individuals during the College’s Founders’ Day event.
 
The 2017 Distinguished Alumni from Mitchell County was presented to Ciji Dellinger who graduated from Mayland Community College with an Associates Degree in Nursing after earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health from ETSU. Dellinger has a passion helping others which is reflected in her current positions as Clinical Supervisor of the Mitchell County Health Department, previous Labor and Delivery Nurse at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital, and Adjunct Health Science Instructor at Mitchell High School. Dellinger also serves on several organizations including the 2017 Asheville March of Dimes Family Ambassador, recruiter and member for the LARC Project, JCPC member, Educator for STD and teen birth prevention for Mitchell County Schools, Perinatal and Infant Loss Committee member, Mitchell County Health Partnership Member, Mitchell County Child Fatality Protection Team Member, and Mitchell County Child Community Child Protection team member.
 
Dellinger loves spending time with her husband, Chad, and twin daughters Ana and Mia. Along with her love for her family and passion to help others through professional and community service, Dellinger is a true supporter of the Mitchell High School athletic program.
 
The 2017 Distinguished Citizen for Mitchell County award was given to Dr. Marvin Walker, a Doctor of Optometry at Appalachian Eye Associates in Spruce Pine. Dr. Walker is an avid member of the community serving in several organizations including Rotary Club of Spruce Pine, the Toe River Board of Health, Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, and Mitchell – Yancey Habitat for Humanity. He is also active in his church as a Mission Team Leader for the Committee on Relief and a bible study leader at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution. Dr. Walker has a true heart for his community and his family, wife Diane and daughters, Maria, Bretta, and Juliana.
 
Other alumni recognized was Ryan Ray and Janna Avery. Other distinguished citizens recognized included Dr. Vernon Chapman and Phillip Barrier, Jr. Altec Industries in Burnsville received the President’s Award.
