Mitchell County Budget Raises Tax Rates

A decrease in property values from a recent revaluation of county property has forced Mitchell County Commissioners to ask for a tax hike in the proposed budget presented to the Board during a special session last week. The proposed budget is balanced with an increased property tax rate of 52.5 cents per $100 dollars of value, up from the 40 cents per $100 which has been the Mitchell County property tax rate since 2010. County Manager Chuck Vines said the county needs the tax revenue to be able operate and provide services. However the purposed budget is likely to change depending on what the general assembly budget in Raleigh looks like after its passage at the end of the month. County officials fear deep cuts in the State Department of Health and Social Services will impact cost on the local level and drastically affect the budget.
