Spruce Pine Town Budget Shortfall

The Town of Spruce Pine is trying to figure out a way to overcome a nearly $300,000 deficit in next year’s proposed budget. The current proposed general fund budget, which includes all town programs except water and sewer, shows revenues of $1,751,722 with expenditures at $2,051,121 while the water and sewer fund is projected to break even. The board must now decide to balance the budget with cuts in expenditures or a raise in Mitchell property taxes. The budget and any possible increase in taxes depend on the county commissioner’s approval of new property tax values, which will be determined within the next few months. A public hearing has been scheduled for June 30th
