Details: Vera Aldine Banks Wilson Johnson went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 31st. She was born August 19, 1930 to the late Charlie and Agnes Blankenship Banks, of Yancey County, NC. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn McPeters, Ida Angel and Madge Fagan; brothers, Willie Crate, Rolin, Hobert, Edwin, Vernon and Bruce; husbands B. M. Wilson and Eugene Johnson, Sr. She attended high school at Bald Creek, where she excelled in baseball and basketball. Her stories of playing catcher and guard are family lore.
In 1947, she married her high school sweetheart, B. M. Wilson. They shared almost 26 years, producing four children from this union, until his untimely death in 1973. She remained a widow for several years until her marriage to Eugene Johnson, Sr.
She volunteered at Mary Immaculate Hospital, Newport News Public Schools substitute teacher, member of the Windsor Great Park Garden Club, worked with the Peninsula Literacy Council, clerical assistant for the State Life Insurance Company, taught Sunday School at Steven’s Memorial Baptist Church and current member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include four children, Linda Wilson Phillips (Lewis) of Newport News, Dianne Wilson Melton of Newport News, Michael Garrett Wilson (Andrea) of Fredericksburg, and Timothy Lynn Wilson (Sharon) of Bedford; sisters, Carolyn Stern of Las Vegas, NV, June Everhart of Asheville, NC, and Anna Lee Higgins of Rutherfordton, NC; a brother Benjamin Banks of Concord, NC; grandchildren, Lewis Phillips, IV, Rebecca Wilson, Sarah Wilson, Mary Wilson, James Wilson, Victoria Wilson, Ann Marie Wilson, David Wilson, Stephanie Oldengram and Amy Melton; great-grandchildren, William Phillips, Christian Phillips, Robert Holloman, Jr. and Rachel Holloman.
Viewing and visitation will begin at 10 AM Friday, April 5, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Newport News, with a funeral service to follow at 11 AM officiated by Reverend Walter Satchell, Jr. On Monday, April 8, 2013, at the Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Burnsville, NC, from 1 to 2 PM there will be viewing and family receiving and funeral service at 2 PM, officiated by Reverend Anthony Fox. Burial will follow in Marrietta Atkins Cemetery, Burnsville, NC.
