Winter Weather Hurts Blood Donations

Winter weather is also hurting the American Red Cross when it comes to keeping-up with the demand for blood.  Snow and ice is still keeping people away from the donation centers. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, a half dozen blood drives had to be canceled. That means the loss of more than 200 units of blood and platelets that had been anticipated. Red Cross officials say staff is ready to go, but winter's still having a negative effect. The next scheduled blood drive in the area is in Yancey County on Tuesday, February 11th from 1:30pm to 6pm at Higgins Memorial Methodist Church.
