Wednesday’s storm system brought heavy rain, damaging winds, power outages and flooding. Those strong wind gusts and power outages continued to plague the region through noon yesterday. Shortly before noon, Progress Energy reported 185 customers in Buncombe County were without electricity, along with 115 in Yancey. Duke Energy earlier in the day reported more than 1,000 customers in the area without power but the number was down to 42 in Henderson County by noon. Dozens of trees were toppled in Western North Carolina Wednesday. No injuries were reported. Scattered power outages were reported Wednesday in Buncombe, Yancey, Rutherford, Cherokee, Graham, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Polk and Swain counties, according to Progress Energy and Duke Energy. Meanwhile, another system is expected to bring rain, sleet and snow to the area over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
