A freak accident that happened on Friday August 24th  left one Yancey County man dead while his wife escaped serious injury. A vehicle driven by 89-year old Grady Edwards of 969 Green Mountain Drive in Burnsville overturned early Friday morning with Edwards and his wife Kathryn inside. The NC Highway Patrol said that Mr.Edwards apparently mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake as he was backing out of his driveway around 8:25 a.m. Friday. The action caused the vehicle to cross road # RP1369, smash into several mailboxes and overturn down an embankment. Mr. Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife was able crawl from the wreckage unharmed. It is unclear if Mr. Edwards was wearing a seat belt but HPD officials say that Mrs. Edwards was wearing her seatbelt during the tragic accident.
