Cougars Picked to Finish Fifth, Mitchell Sixth in WHC Football

The preseason coaches’ poll in the upcoming 2014 Western Highlands Conference football race was just released and it looks like Mountain Heritage, Mitchell and Madison will have a lot to prove being picked to finish 5th, 6th and 7th respectively in the only split 1/A-2/A conference in the area. Owen, which returns 16 starters including 2,500 yard rusher Jager Gardner and three other all-conference players, was the top vote getter in the poll followed by Polk County, Hendersonville and Avery County. The Cougars open up the season on the road in Morganton at Patton on August 22nd while Mitchell will begin their season at Millers Creek against West Wilkes on the same night.

Heritage Heisman Winners Announced

Cane River Shooting Camp

The annual Cane River Shooting Camp was a big success this week as Rebel Coach Jeff Fender and his staff of coaches and former players put around 44 kids from across the area through their paces with various drills and exercises designed to help improve the skill of shooting the basketball. On the final day of camp participants were able to show what they had learned during the week when they faced off in a series of shooting competitions for the different age groups.Coach Fender said that this year’s Shooting Camp was great for the kids and a lot of fun with the highest scores yet in the skills competition. Winners in their age groups were : Free Throw Champs 3rd and 4th grades-Aiden Silvers--5th and 6th-Landry Peterson and Gabe Silvers--7th and 8th-Hannah Ray and Nathaniel Ledford---Three Point Shootout--3rd and 4th- Aiden Silvers-5th and 6th-Alyssa Peterson and Timothy Silvers-7th and 8th-Hannah Ray and Justus Shelton. Heritage Coach Joey Robinson Honored With State Award

Mountain Heritage athletic director/football coach Joey Robinson is one of the statewide winners of the Homer Thompson Eight Who Make a Difference Sportsmanship award from the N.C.
