Cougar Football Gets First Test at Swain Friday 8-14-14

By David Grindstaff
A trip to Swain County this Friday night for their only pre-season scrimmage game of the 2014 season will answer a lot of questions the Heritage coaching staff may have about their young team that enters the upcoming campaign with only three starters back on offense and four returning starters on the defensive side of the football. Cougar head coach Joey Robinson (more)

Cane River Football Practice Off To Solid Start

A young Cane River football team took its licks last season in a season out of the norm for the Rebels who finished with a 2-4 record, tied for third place in the Toe River Middle School Conference. Rebel Coach Cody Tipton says that the adversity that his young 7th graders endured last year only made them stronger and produced some leaders on the team for this year’s campaign. With 15 returning experienced players, including All-Conference running backs Isaac Shuford and Caleb Edwards and middle linebacker/offensive line standout Keaton Hall who coach Tipton called the inspirational leader of the team, the Rebels will be ready to better compete on the field this season .  Also starting in the backfield for the Rebels early this year are quarterback Colton Morrow and running back Jeremy Robinson. Coach Tipton said that although his line will not be as big as they were last season, his athletes in the trenches will be much quicker as will the overall team speed this year. Twenty -two players reported for Rebel camp last week as the team tries to get ready for its first test August 21 in a three team scrimmage at Erwin Middle School with Canton Middle School. The action gets underway at 5:30 pm. Photo by David Grindstaff--david@wkyk.com

Panthers Begin Football Practice With High Hopes

The football team at East Yancey is hoping to continue its recent dominance in the Toe River Conference and they are off to a good start following a spirited preseason camp last week and a good first couple of days of official practice this week. Panther head coach Wade Shehan welcomed around 35 athletes to practice; many of them experienced players from last year’s undefeated conference championship team. East Yancey is working on a three-peat  this season after winning the last two regular season and Tri County Bowl crowns and they will get their first test in a scrimmage game at home against Waynesville Middle tentatively scheduled for the August 17th. Cougars Picked to Finish Fifth, Mitchell Sixth in WHC Football

The preseason coaches’ poll in the upcoming 2014 Western Highlands Conference football race was just released and it looks like Mountain Heritage, Mitchell and Madison will have a lot to prove being picked to finish 5th, 6th and 7th respectively in the only split 1/A-2/A conference in the area. Owen, which returns 16 starters including 2,500 yard rusher Jager Gardner and three other all-conference players, was the top vote getter in the poll followed by Polk County, Hendersonville and Avery County. The Cougars open up the season on the road in Morganton at Patton on August 22nd while Mitchell will begin their season at Millers Creek against West Wilkes on the same night.
