Dylan Forbes Has Outstanding Season


Former Mitchell High School stand out Dylan Forbes was a team member of the best baseball team in the history of Winston-Salem State University. Dylan is a freshmen right-handed picture for the Rams who went 42-15 on the season. Winston-Salem lost to Millersville (Pa.) last week in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional in Erie, Pennsylvania. Forbes pitched in seven games this spring.  He had one save, a 3.97 earned run average and two strikeouts in 11.1 innings. Dylan's role is expected to increase a great deal going into his sophomore season.

Male and Female Athelete of the Year at Mitchell


At the June 2nd Senior Award's Night Zach Boone and Madison Spurling were named Mitchell High Schools 2015 Male and Female Athlete of the Year. This award was presented by Coach Emily Hyatt.  Zach and Madison both have participated on the varsity level since their freshmen year. Sam McKinney Signs with Montreat


Mitchell High School senior Sam McKinney has committed to playing basketball at Montreat College. McKinney was an All-Western Highlands Conference guard for the Mountaineers who averaged 10.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He was selected to the West versus MidWest All-Star game. McKinney missed an early portion of the season after breaking four facial bones and suffering a concussion during a practice drill.  

Bowman Athletic Awards Ceremony


On Thursday, May 21st, The administration, faculty and staff of Bowman Middle School, as well as parents, family members and student athletes gathered in the Darrell Ledford Memorial Auditorium on the BMS campus to participate in its 2014-2015 Athletic Awards Ceremony.  Principal Scott Jenkins welcomed the crowd and offered congratulations to each student athlete and wished them continued (more)

Ryan McKinney Signs to Play Baseball


Mitchell's Ryan McKinney has signed to play baseball at Johnson University. This past season the senior batted .362 and lead Mitchell in walks (26), on-base percentage (.583), and runs scored (22). His on-base percentage led the Western Highlands conference and his number of walks led the state. He helped Mitchell earn a second place finish in the conference. He is also an Academic Letter Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society and plans to earn a teaching degree in Sports & Fitness Leadership to become a teacher and coach after college. Johnson University is located in Knoxville, Tenn. and plays in the D1 division of the Mid-East region of the NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association). Ryan is the son of Russell and Tonya McKinney of Spruce Pine.

Final Spring Sports Round Up at Mitchell


Our Baseball team finished the season at 12-8, 9-3 in conf. They had a tough loss on Friday to East Wilkes in the 2nd round of the play-offs. Women's Soccer and Softball both made the play-offs, but were defeated in the 1st round. With a lot of experienced players coming back next season, we look for big things out of both teams. Our Track team did well at the state meet in Greensboro on Friday. Results: Zach Boone won his 8th and 9th State Titles. 1600m and 3200m run. Todd Self was a finalist in the discuss throw. Eden Phillips came in 4th in the 400m. The girls 4x400m relay came in 5th. (Megan Dellinger, Katie Parkins, Emma Duncan, Eden Phillips) Madison Spurling came in 8th in the high jump. Our 200m relay team came in 12th. Accolades for Mitchell High Wrestlers


The accolades keep coming for Coach Ed Duncan and his outstanding Mitchell High wrestling team. On Sunday, The Mitchell High School Wrestling Team was named as the WNC Olympic sports team of the year by the Mountain Athletic Club. The award was announced at a banquet at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. Also at the banquet they were presented the Blue Ridge Bone and Joint 2A/1A Male Team Olympic Sport award. Congratulations to the state champion Mitchell High Wrestling Team.

Mitchell Wins Wrestling Championship (Details)
