Mitchell Wins Season Opener in Soccer


Mitchell opened its season with a 9-0 win against non-conference opponent Cherokee. Juan Campos led the Mountaineers with 4 goals, and Solomon Duncan added 3 more. Jacob Cook and Aaron Martinez also added 1 goal each to round out Mitchell's scoring. 
Martinez and Jose Queriapa each had 2 assists. Mitchell is 1-0 and will travel to take on McDowell next Monday.

Ryan McKinney Signs to Play Baseball


Mitchell's Ryan McKinney has signed to play baseball at Johnson University. This past season the senior batted .362 and lead Mitchell in walks (26), on-base percentage (.583), and runs scored (22). His on-base percentage led the Western Highlands conference and his number of walks led the state. He helped Mitchell earn a second place finish in the conference. He is also an Academic Letter Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society and plans to earn a teaching degree in Sports & Fitness Leadership to become a teacher and coach after college. Johnson University is located in Knoxville, Tenn. and plays in the D1 division of the Mid-East region of the NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association). Ryan is the son of Russell and Tonya McKinney of Spruce Pine.

Mitchell Wins Wrestling Championship (Details)


Mitchell triumphed over Chatham Central Saturday evening, February 7th by a score of 42 to 30 to claim the State 1A Championship. Kegan Hoilman won the Outstanding Performance award. Photos by Steve Hall.
