Wrestling State Championships were held Saturday and the Mitchell Mountaineer Wrestling Team came up half a point short. The 1A State Champion Chatham Central had a team score of 98.5. Mitchell had 98 Points. Mitchell senior Daniel Bomar, was the 1-A state champion at 170 pounds. Bomar (59-3) took a 8-2 decision over Rosewood’s Josh Drew.
Mitchell High has received more than 30 applications for the vacant head varsity football coaching position and the search has been narrowed down to 10, according to School Superintendent Dr. Rick Spurling. The search committee will now conduct interviews with the ten finalists on February 24th and 25th with final interviews taking place the same week. The Mountaineers are searching for a replacement for longtime coach Russell Barnett who resigned last month.
Mitchell High crowned 3 regional champions and qualified a total of nine wrestlers for the state championships next weekend in Greensboro en route to winning the 1a west regional wrestling title. Levi Richardson pinned all four opponents including Levi Swearengin of Cherokee in the finals to earn the 126lb title. Sophomore Dalton Beaver outlasted Shea Wilson of Mt. Airy to earn the 145 lb title, and Daniel Bomar won his second straight regional title, defeating Nathan Craig of Robbinsville at 170lbs. Robbinsville finished 2nd in the team scoring, followed closely by Mt Airy and Rosman. The State Championships will be held in Greensboro next weekend.
