Doug Sudduth River

Doug Sudduth took this great photo on the North Toe just downstream from the old demolished Penland dam and upstream of the Wing community. According to Alex Glover,PG, Corporate Director of  Mining and Environmental, Active Minerals International, LLC, the big black rock is part of the Ashe Metamorphic Suite and is a muscovite, biotite, amphibolite. These rocks are normally very angular in shape so the roundness of the boulder indicates that it has been in the creek for quite some time. It likely saw quite a few Native Americans in its time and was most likely there before them too!
