Fresh Preserves Coming to Burnsville Town Center

“Fresh Preserves” is coming to the Burnsville Town Center July 14th for two shows. There will be an afternoon show at 2:30 pm and evening show at 7:30 pm.

“Fresh Preserves” began as a cd of  Tom Godleski’s songs based on true stories. Tom Godleski, an Asheville. N. C. native, and founding member of the bluegrass group, “Buncombe Turnpike,” wrote eight of the ten tunes himself. These songs originated from stories that were told to Tom by friends and family members since he was a child.  “After I wrote the CD, I thought I could write a play about how these stories came about, who I collected them from,” Godleski said. “It was a way of honoring my uncle, my grandfather and my mom, who had been telling me stories since I was a kid. “My uncle Robert Fowler was my biggest influence as a storyteller. He passed away in August of 2008, he was 94 years old. He got dementia at the end of his life, and he couldn't remember his stories. Then it became even more important for me to write this play, to keep the stories alive,” Godleski said. ,”Fresh Preserves,” was chosen to be staged from over 200 scripts in The Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre’ annual “Scriptfest” playwrights competition for 2009.
