Yancey School Board Recognizes Certifications

At its meeting Monday night, the Yancey County Board of Education recognized the following staff for obtaining National Board Certification: Kelly Boone at Cane River, Wade Shehan at East Yancey, Belinda Burleson at Micaville/South Toe and Denise Marlow, at Mountain Heritage. Also recognized were Shelly Bailey and Dawn Robinson, both of Clearmont Elementary School, for receiving their 10-year renewal of National Board Certification.
The Board of Education also reviewed final drawings and color selections of the Cane River and East Yancey Middle Schools Health Center Additions.  Drawings will be released for bid on February 10th.  There will be a pre-bid conference on February 20th at East Middle School at 4:00 p.m.  Bids will be opened Thursday, March 1st at the Yancey County Schools Central Office Board Room.  Construction of the Centers should be complete by mid-September of this year.
It was also announced that through community donations and the fundraising efforts of the Mountain Heritage JROTC, a new, lighted 50’ flagpole will soon be installed at Mountain Heritage High School.  Broward Flag Company was selected and approved by the Board for this project.   Donna Harmon of Piedmont Natural Gas presented a cost-saving proposal to the Board that would provide natural gas service to East Yancey Middle and Burnsville Elementary Schools.  The conversion of these schools to natural gas will eliminate fuel oil and propane, thus providing a cleaner energy source and the potential to save the school system thousands of dollars annually.
The Board also received a budgetary update from Finance Officer Robbie Renfro of the expenditures year-to-date.  She told the Board that, the school system is on target to complete the school year as budgeted. Ms. Renfro also reminded the Board that Federal EduJobs grant of $591,000 that has been used to retain positions will expire this year.
