A tragic accident just outside of Burnsville yesterday has left two people dead and two others injured. Yancey County emergency personnel responded to the scene of the horrific accident that happened around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday morning on the new bridge being constructed at Cane River as part of the Hwy. 19 E widening project. Witnesses say a vehicle, traveling towards Burnsville at a high rate of speed, broke through several barriers near the bridge and plowed into a cement truck and several workers before bursting into flames. The driver of the vehicle was killed in the accident, as was the operator of the Southern Concrete truck who was standing beside his truck. A Department of Transportation worker was airlifted to Asheville in critical condition. A Taylor and Murphy Construction Company worker suffered minor injuries. The Highway patrol is withholding names as authorities work to notify family members. Trooper Brian Wyatt said investigators aren't sure why the car ran off the highway. Investigation of the accident is continuing today.
