State Department of Transportation worker, 34 year old Michael Dwayne Ricker, of Spruce Pine, who was airlifted to Mission Hospital Tuesday, was listed in good condition yesterday. Ricker is recovering as the investigation continues today on the wreck at Riverside in a construction zone that occurred Tuesday morning. According to the Highway Patrol, 41 year old Christopher Shawn Whitson, of Burnsville, was traveling east in a Mazda sedan at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway, crashing through construction barrels and a barricade before striking a stationary Southern Concrete Co. cement truck. Whitson was killed when his vehicle overturned and caught on fire after hitting the truck. The driver of the truck, 49 year old Charles James Baker, of Greeneville, Tenn., who was standing beside his truck, was also killed. Michael Ricker was one of two other men standing with the truck driver that was injured. A Taylor & Murphy Construction Co. worker, 56 year old Preston Douglas Phillips, of Mars Hill, suffered minor injuries.
