The Spruce Pine Fire Department worked for over an hour Monday afternoon rescuing a fisherman who had fallen down an embankment in an effort to reach the waters of the Toe River near Ingles Market in Spruce Pine. The incident, which happened around 4 p.m., forced law enforcement to close down Greenwood Road while rescue workers used an extended ladder on one of the fire trucks to help bring the man up to the roadway. According to a Fire Department spokesman, the man was later flown to Mission Hospital in Asheville where he was treated for a severely broken leg.
