Candidates Working Hard to Qualify for Local Races

Ricky McKinney has collected enough signatures for the November ballot for county commissioner in Mitchell County. McKinney, who acquired 466 valid signatures which puts him over the 457 vote barrier, is the first of two petition candidates vying to get on the ballot. The other would-be candidates, Jerry Prosser, who is 84 signatures shy of the necessary 457, will join McKinney on the ballot as unaffiliated choices for the November 6 election if he reaches the benchmark by Friday afternoon. Jim Garofalo along with incumbents Ken Hollifield and Keith Holtsclaw will be their Republican opposition for three available seats. In related news, three People have filed for two open seats on the Mitchell County Board of Education. Incumbents Jan Hamilton, Jeff Harding and Laura Smith are on the ballot, according to Mitchell Elections Director Amy Young. The other incumbent member of the Board, Sam Blevins has not yet declared for the race. He will have until noon on July 6th to file.
