After a high speed chase on Monday from the McDowell County line to the city limits of Marion, 45-year-old David Russell Garland of White Oak Road in Bakersville was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, resisting arrest, assault on a government official, felony fleeing to elude arrest, failing to heed light and siren, and simple possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Deputies arrested Garland after he bolted during a routine license check in Mitchell County. The pursuit reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour before officials from McDowell and Mitchell were able to bring the chase to a halt. Garland is being held in jail on a $169,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 10th.
