Passing Counterfeit Bills

Local authorities are alerting area businesses to be on the lookout for two dark haired women who have been passing counterfeit bills in Mitchell and Yancey Counties over the past several days. A woman in her early twenties accompanied by an older woman have passed the bills at four businesses in Mitchell County and around ten businesses in Yancey County. Authorities say that the counterfeit bills were originally real $5 bills that have been put through a bleaching process and reprinted with values of $50 and $100. The bills pass the iodine pen test that businesses use to determine if they are real or not but under close inspection appear yellowish in color. The women are said to be driving a newer model Chevy Camaro or Corvette and authorities have been able to trace the car to a rental company through a tag number they were able to obtain and are in the process of identifying the persons who leased the vehicle. Anyone who sees the suspects or receives a suspicious bill should contact local police.
