Six Months after announcing a $1.1 million renovation and plans to hire over 70 workers over the next three years, the Bombardier Recreational Products plant in Spruce Pine said this week that it will be laying off 40 workers due to the loss of a third party contract. The layoffs, which will take effect on November 2nd, will knock the total workforce at the plant down from 220 employees to 180 and comes on the heels of a recent announcement that Unimin Corporation will layoff 70 workers while idling two of its plants in Mitchell County. A spokesman at BRP headquarters said that the loss of the contract was an unfortunate bump in the road and that the company is looking to replace the business it lost and will again build its workforce at the Spruce Pine facility.
