Authorities have made an arrest connected to the passing of counterfeit bills at retail stores in Mitchell and Yancey Counties over the weekend. Police said 19-year-old Marcie Sweeten was at a residence in Nebo when she was arrested on Friday and charged with nine counts of obtaining property by false pretences, possession of counterfeit bills and passing forged document . She is in the Yancey County Jail under a $60,000 secured bond. Authorities have also issued a warrant for her mother, 42-year-old Tyra Penland whose last known address was in Richmond Virginia. Local authorities traveled to Virginia over the weekend looking for Penland after tracing a car used in the counterfeit bill spending spree to a rental car company near the airport in Richmond.
