Three years after Heritage took a 54-21 romp over the Madison Patriots in an opening round game of the NCHSAA State 2A Playoffs on their way to an appearance in the championship in Chapel Hill, the Cougars had the tables turned on them in a lopsided loss to the Patriots in a first round game in Marshall Friday night.
After the two teams traded a couple of punts to open the first ever home playoff game at Madison, the Patriots toyed with Cougars on their way to a 62-7 victory.
The senior dominated Patriot team strangled the Cougar running game, which was limited to just 82 yards rushing under the weight of a Madison defense that quickly took away Heritage’s bread and butter strategy of running the football between the tackles.
The Patriots scored once in the first quarter and two more times in that first half to take a 21-0 lead before Heritage (4-7) would respond with a 61 yard scoring drive for their only points of the evening.
A first down pass to senior Austin Meadows from junior QB Trevor Robinson got the drive underway and following a strong carry by junior running back Dalton Robinson the Cougars were finally on the move.
Robinson’s run to the Patriot 35 was followed by a first down pass reception by junior wide receiver Jake McClellan inside to the Madison 15.
The Cougars scored as the first half clock expired to get back in the game and trim the Patriot lead to 14 points going into the locker room at halftime.
Trevor Robinson hit Colby Presnell with a short pass and the junior running back raced into the end zone for a 12 yard score. Sophomore Eddie Magna added the PAT to cut the Madison advantage to 21-7, and the Cougar fans still had hope.
But that hope was quickly dashed when Madison (11-1) exploded for 34 points in the third quarter to blow the lid off any idea of a Cougar comeback.
Trevor Robinson completed 10 of 26 passes in the contest for 119 yards. He finished the 2012 season with 1549 yards passing with 18 touchdowns and a dozen interceptions. Dalton Robinson carried the football 12 times for 67 yards to pace the Cougar ground game against the big, aggressive Patriot defense.
These two juniors will be key players for the Cougar varsity come next season when Coach Joey Robinson looks to get his ballclub back on the winning track with 14 battled tested players expected to return for their senior campaign and a host of talented players coming into the fold from a Western Highlands Conference junior varsity championship season this year.
The Cougars had 14 seniors play their final snap for their school Friday night in the opening round playoff game, including: Zac Robinson, Drew Hoilman, Austin Meadows, Lucas King, Austin Gardner, Drew Brown, Zack Brown, Tanner Duncan, Jon Jon Renfro, Brandon Buchanan, Daniel Honeycutt, Bradley Riddle, Jay Howell and Jake Webb.
