A recount is possible in the Yancey County Commissioners race where Democrat Jim Edwards edged out Republican Duane Cassida by only 29 votes in the general election on November 6. Complete and unofficial returns show Edwards received 4,555 votes and Cassida 4,526. According to Yancey Elections Director Mary Beth Tipton, the Board of Elections meets to caucus on November 16. Since the vote was so close a recount would be granted if requested by the losing candidate. There were 6 candidates running for 3 available seats in the Yancey County Commissioners race. The top vote getter was Republican Jeff Whitson with 5,278 votes while Democrat Randy Ollis received the 2nd highest number of votes with 4,650.
