Cougar JV's work hard in non-conference games. The Cougar JV pulled away from a good AC Reynolds team to win their first game of the 2012-2013 campaign last week in action at Mountain Heritage.The Cougars, behind the inside-outside duo of Brennan Hockaday and Gray McCurry, maintained a 5 to seven point lead for most of the game before the physical Rockets forced a number of turnovers late in the third quarter to knot thighs up at 40-40 going into the final seven minutes of play.
Heritage was able to pull away in the 4th quarter by securing the basketball and hitting their foul shots down the stretch to record a 59- 49 victory.
Hockaday was a beast on the inside with his strong play around the hoop. He finished with 26 points to lead the Cougars . McCurry made sure the ball was in the hands of the right people late in the game and finished with 16 points from the point.
Job Kennedy and Ethan Ray scored 5 points each for the Cougars while Colton Garland and Nick Chandler added 4 and 3 points respectively for Heritage.
Gray McCurry finished with 8 assists while Ethan Ray and Bryson Cooper also contributed an assists in the win.
Brennan Hockaday grabbed 13 of the Heritage total of 35 rebounds followed by Gray McCurry (7), Job Kennedy (6), Ethan Ray (4), Colton Garland (3) and Bryson Cooper with 2.
Gray McCurry and Brennan Hockaday tied for the lead in steals with 4 apiece against the Rockets while Job Kennedy had two takeaways.
In the rematch between the two teams on Friday the Cougars hung close with the Rockets, tied at the half and trailing by seven going into the 4th quarter, but foul trouble took its toll on Heritage in the games final seven minutes.
Cougar starters Gray McCurry and Job Kennedy missed big chunks of time in the 2nd half due to foul trouble and both fouled out in the 4th quarter while ACR won the game at the charity stripe, shooting 30 free throws in the game.
Brennan Hockaday tallied 10 points to lead the Cougars who got balanced scoring from the rest of the team: Colton Garland (6), Gray McCurry (5),Job Kennedy (4), Jared Sellers (4), Bryson Cooper (4), Andrew Hall( 2) and Nick Chandler (2).
Colton Garland was tops in rebounding with 9 with help from Job Kennedy (6), Brennan Hockaday (5) and Jared Sellers (4).
Gray McCurry, Ethan Ray and Brennan Hockaday each had an assists while Gar McCurry and Job Kennedy also blocked a shot each in the loss.
The Lady Cougar JV is still searching for its first win after dropping a pair of games to AC Reynolds last week. Heritage fell 42-32 on Tuesday night, hanging close to the Lady Rockets but never quite able to get over the hump.
Caitlyn Chrishawn led the Lady Cougars with 6 points while Allie Tabor chipped in 5 and Jessica Laws and Kassie Gilley added three points apiece.
Cougar teams will be on the road this week, Wednesday at Enka and Friday at Asheville High.
