Heritage junior varsity boys finish strong in Non-Conference run
The Cougar JV will host Hendersonville on Friday night in the first test in their defense of the Western Highlands Conference titles that they have earned over the past two years.Heritage used their final non-conference games to work out the kinks on both sides of the court in games last week with Mountain Athletic Conference teams North Buncombe, Enka and Asheville High.
In a 54-34 win over Enka the Cougar JV bolted to a 16-3 lead in the opening seven minutes of play and they were never threaten after that as the big men on the inside had a field day with Jared Sellers leading the way with 16 points while Brennan Hockaday added 11. Heritage also got good production from Gray McCurry with 8, Bryson Cooper with 7 while Job Kennedy and Colton Garland tallied 6 apiece.
Another balanced effort on the boards saw Heritage dominate led by Brennan Hockaday (10 rebounds), Job Kennedy (9),
Gray McCurry (8), Jared Sellers (7), Bryson Cooper (3) and Andrew Hall collected two rebounds for the Cougars.
Gray McCurry dealt 8 assists from the point while guards Ethan Ray and Nick Chandler handed out 2 each in the blowout.
Heritage came away with 13 steals in the contest led by Gray McCurry and Ethan Ray with 4 each, with Andrew Hall, Job Kennedy and Brennan Hockaday all with 2 steals as part of the Cougar ball hawking defense.
Jared Sellers had 2 blocked shots to pace the Cougars while Gray McCurry, Job Kennedy and Ethan Ray also blocked a shot in the win over the 3A Jets.
The Cougars showed little regard for the Cougars from Asheville High on another road trip Friday night as Heritage blew open a tight game with a 32 point third quarter to runaway for a 62-36 victory.
Played without starter Andrew Hall, out of the lineup with dental work, the Cougars didn't miss a beat with freshman Job Kennedy in the starting lineup. Kennedy led the team on the glass with 10 rebounds while scoring 6 points.
Gray McCurry scored all of his 15 points in the first half while Brennan Hockaday also tallied 15 points spread throughout the contest. Jared Sellers contributed 10 points followed by Luke Antinori with 7, Job Kennedy with 6, Colton Garland with 3while Ethan Ray, Nick Chandler and Bryson Cooper all chipped in two points each.
Following Kennedy in rebounding were Brennan Hockaday (8), Gray McCurry (6), Jared Sellers (4), Bryson Cooper (3), Nick Chandler (2) while 5 other players tied with 1 rebound apiece.
Gray McCurry had six assists while Brennan Hockaday, Bryson Cooper and Nick Chandler all dished out a pair of assists apiece.
Jared Sellers and Job Kennedy each blocked two shots while Luke Antinori also got a block in the 26 point victory over the MAC Cougars.
The only blemish on the Cougar JV record last week was a hard fought 43-39 loss to North Buncombe. Heritage had an off night shooting the basketball at North, connecting on only 10 of 21 from the free throw line while shooting just 28 percent from the floor. Colton Garland led the scoring with 11 points, Brennan Hockaday was tops in Rebounding with 12 and Gray McCurry had 4 assist.
