A woman’s body discovered in a wrecked car in McDowell County last week has been positively identified. An autopsy confirmed the body was that of a 27 year old single mother, Elizabeth Estelle Stonger, who was last seen Oct. 14 when she left her job as a cashier at Walmart in Belmont. She lived in Gaston County with her 2-year-old son and her mother. Autopsy results and a cause of death have not been released, and the investigation is ongoing. The Chevy Lumina along with her remains were found Dec. 3 in a steep, wooded ravine on Spooky Hollow Road, off U.S. 221 south of Marion. The car apparently ran off the road and plunged over a steep embankment. Family members said they knew of no reason Stonger may have gone to McDowell County and she didn't appear to have packed a bag or in any other way prepared to leave.
