Mitchell Commissioners are discussing the possibility of constructing a new jail facility for the county. The rising cost the county is paying to transport and incarcerate prisoners at other jails in neighboring counties has officials eying the idea of building their own facility. Options being discussed are the construction of a combined jail and law enforcement center near the Mitchell County Courthouse or a shared facility with McDowell County at their location in Marion.  Some officials warned that construction of a new law enforcement / jail facility, like those in neighboring counties, would make taxes go up.
