The Lady Cougars ran their unbeaten record to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in league play with convincing wins over Enka and Hendersonville last week in Burnsville.
The Lady Cougars, who ran past Enka by thirty points in their first meeting in Asheville, saw a different opponent on the court Tuesday night in what turned out to be a battle till the final whistle.
Both teams struggled with six turnovers in the first quarter as Heritage managed a 10-7 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
Heritage led by five points late in the second quarter before a three pointer by the Sugar Jets, one of four in the quarter, trimmed the Lady Cougar advantage back to two at the intermission.
The game remained tight as the Lady Cougars managed to build a six point lead only to see it whittled back to two points going into the 4th quarter after Enka, who hit six three pointers in the game, drained the final shot of the 3rd.
Heritage finally gained a working margin after an old fashion three point play by Brianna Woody pushed the lead to 48-38 with 1:30 remaining.
The Lady Cougars nailed several key free throws in the final minute to record a hard fought 50-41 win.
Samm Chandler had a season high 22 points to pace the Lady Cougars who also got good performances from Brianna Woody, who scored 13 points, and Destiny Elkins, who finished with nine.
The Lady Cougars got off to another slow start in their WHC opener with Hendersonville but once they got their defense set they were off and running. Thanks to ten quick first quarter points by Brianna Woody and a couple of three pointers from Nyssa Freeman and Kaylon Johnson , Heritage enjoyed a 19-3 advantage after the first eight minutes of play.
With Brianna Woody and Samm Chandler dominated in the paint, the Lady Cougars continued to increase their lead and with a 16-2 run to start the third quarter Heritage pushed the lead out to 50-13 with ten minutes to go in the game.
The Lady Cougars had four players to score in double figures in the 68-31 victory. Samm Chandler led the way with 16 followed by Destiny Elkins with 13, Brianna Woody with 12 and Kaylon Johnson with 11.
