In the wake of the recent tragic school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, a local Yancey County citizen has petitioned the County Commissioners and Board of Education on behalf of the citizens of Yancey County to direct their attention immediately to the issue of school safety. Tim Tipton, a certified police officer who worked for several years as a deputy sheriff and as a criminal investigator, said in his petition that Yancey County Schools are NOT as safe as they should be and that it is not appropriate to ask unarmed school personnel to risk death by confronting an armed person. The petition is requesting that the leaders of the county and school system take immediate action to put in place a feasible plan to ensure that all schools in Yancey County have a certified police office on duty during all hours in which school is in session by the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, or earlier if possible. The Yancey Commissioners and Board of Education have not yet had time to respond to the December 17th document. (Read Full document here)
