Heritage junior varsity action heats up
The Cougar JV boys improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in Western highlands Conference play with wins over North Buncombe and Owen last week.After leading the Black Hawks by six points at the half on Tuesday night in Burnsville, the Cougars pushed the lead out to ten points by the start of the 4th quarter before North Buncombe came storming back.
A Hawk free throw with 2:50 remaining tied the score at 40-40 and it took a Gray McCurry dish and Jared Sellers winning lay-up as time expired for Heritage to escap with a 48-46 non-conference win.
The Cougars made the best of their trips to the free throw line in the game, nailing all ten shots while North Buncombe hit only 12 of 27 shots from the charity stripe in the contest.
Brennan Hockaday had another solid performance for the Cougars with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Gray McCurry continued his strong work at the point with 12 points, 7 assists, 5 steals, 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Jared Sellers added 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 2 steals from his forward spot while Job Kennedy chipped in 4 points, 6 rebounds, one assists and two blocked shots for the Cougars in the win.
In a 81-60 win at Owen on Friday night Hockaday had his best game of the season with a double-double, scoring 31 points while grabbing 10 rebounds and coming away with two steals and a blocked shot as well.
Hockaday had plenty of help. Jarad Sellers scored 17 points, Gray McCurry added 13 while Bryson Cooper chipped in 7 and Job Kennedy contributed 6.
The Cougars will continue their quest to defend their Western highlands Conference title when they travel to Mitchell for games with the Mountaineers on Friday Night.

The JV girls dropped another heart breaker in overtime to Owen 35-34 while falling to North Buncombe 42-29.
