Forest Service Plans to Burn Part of Linville Gorge Wilderness Area

The US Forest Service wants to burn the portions of the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, a jungle covered canyon, known as “the Grand Canyon of the East,” near Morganton.  A proposal in a petition against it has gathered about 300 signatures so far. Hunters, hikers, climbers, fishermen and local homeowners are raising objections to the proposed burn. The Wilderness Area is federal land which is protected by a special Act of Congress that allows the building of trails and excludes timber harvest, building and mining.  Access to the Forest Service proposal, a 49 page document, can be found on the Resources page of www.savelgw.org. The Forest Service closes the period allowed for comments on the matter on January 15th.
