The Cougar JV boys improved to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in Western Highlands Conference play with wins over Thomas Jefferson and Mitchell last week.
The Heritage JV boys had a scare at Mitchell on Friday where the game came down to the wire.
Heritage took an early seven point lead over the Mountaineerson on the hot shooting of Brennan Hockaday before Mitchell picked up the defensive pressure and trimmed the lead back to three at the end of the first quarter. The Cougars led 25-22 at the half following an offensive rebound and put back by Bryson Cooper at the end of the second quarter.
Nick Chandler also came up big in the second quarter, contributing 6pts for the Cougars.
Heritage fell behind three points early in the third but recovered to a lead 33-31 going into the 4th quarter .
With the two teams knotted at 37-37 for much of the 4th quarter, it took a Jared Sellers assist to Job Kennedy for a basket that gave Heritage a 39-37 lead with around 20 seconds left in the game.
Mitchell misfired on their next trip up court and after grabbing the rebound Gray McCurry hurled a length of the court pass to Brennan Hockaday who finishes with a lay up and is fouled. Hockaday misses the free throw and Mitchell hurries down court and gets to the free throw line after a mad scramble for the rebound.
The Mountaineers miss the first free throw and hit the second to cut it to 41-38 with about 8 seconds left in the game. Mitchell then picks off a long Cougar pass and score a lay up as time expires allowing the Cougars to hang on for a 41-40 win.
Thomas Jefferson was no match for the Cougars on a road trip to Burnsville on Tuesday night as Heritage exploded for an 18-3 lead in the first seven minutes of play and they never looked back at the Gryphons in a 68-25 victory.St
