DOT Hopes To Have 19W Reopened by Sunday

Crews from the NC Department of Transportation have been working diligently to clear several tons of rock and mud from a slide on Hwy 19W about 12 miles from Cane River.  A huge rock, the size of a small house slid into the roadway on Wednesday after heavy rains for several days had weakened the area near the river. DOT crews were busy Friday drilling holes in the large boulder and a smaller rock that sits just yards away from a residence to prep it for an expandable grout which when activated by water and temperature expands to break the rock apart so that it can be removed from the roadway by DOT crews and local contractors. Chris Deyton, County Maintenance Engineer for Yancey and Mitchell Counties, said that workers hoped to have the road opened by yesterday afternoon.
